The American Association of Immunologists (AAI), the world’s leading professional organization dedicated to advancing the field of immunology, has announced its support for the California Immunology Medical Research & Cures Initiative, a historic statewide ballot measure that would invest $8.4 billion in cutting-edge immunology research in California if approved by voters this November.
California is home to some of the nation’s top research institutions, biotechnology companies, and scientific talent. AAI’s support underscores the state’s critical role as a global engine of biomedical innovation—and the importance of sustained investment to maintain that leadership.
“California has long been a U.S. leader in biomedical innovation,” said Loretta Doan, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of AAI. “This initiative represents a forward-looking investment in science, health, and economic growth. By supporting immunology research, California can once again be a shining example to the entire nation as it continues to drive breakthroughs that improve lives and maintains its leadership in developing the next generation of medical advances.”
The immune system plays a central role in nearly all aspects of human health, and advances in immunology have already led to breakthroughs in cancer immunotherapy, vaccines, and treatments for autoimmune diseases—many of which are improving and saving lives today.
Shane Crotty, PhD, a member-elect of AAI’s Council, Professor and Chief Scientific Officer at the La Jolla Institute (LJI) for Immunology, and Director of the LJI Center for Vaccine Innovation said, “Immunology research is transforming how we prevent and treat a wide range of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer.”
“In this difficult federal funding environment, the California Immunology Medical Research & Cures Initiative represents an investment that will enable immunologists to continue making the fundamental discoveries that will lead to better treatments, diagnostics, vaccines, and ultimately cures that improve lives around the world.”
AAI joins a growing coalition of scientists, research institutions, patient advocates, and public health leaders supporting the Initiative.
