In response to the Executive Order revising childhood vaccine recommendations, AAI President Avery August, PhD, issued the following statement:
AAI is alarmed by the Administration’s decision to issue unscientific recommendations for childhood vaccines outside the established, evidence-based processes that have long guided U.S. immunization policy.
Vaccines are among the most thoroughly studied and successful public health interventions in history. Decisions regarding childhood immunization should be guided by rigorous scientific evidence, transparent expert review, and the established processes that have protected the health of generations of children.
As immunologists, we have confidence in the rigorous research that demonstrates the safety and efficacy of vaccines, and we know that public confidence in them depends on trust in science. Policies that depart from longstanding scientific and medical consensus without clear, transparent justification severely risk undermining that trust.
AAI will continue to support vaccine policies grounded in science and to advocate for immunization recommendations that protect the health and well-being of all children.
