In response to the announcement for the Nobel Laureates in Phisiology or Medicine 2025, Dr. Uli von Andrian, President of the American Association of Immunologists, said:

The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Mary E. Brunkow, Dr. Fred Ramsdell, and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi on being awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking discoveries in peripheral immune tolerance.

We are especially proud to recognize Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, a Distinguished Fellow of AAI, for this well-deserved honor. His pioneering work on regulatory T cells and the mechanisms by which the immune system suppresses inappropriate responses has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of immune balance. His insights not only advanced basic science, but also laid the foundation for new therapeutic approaches in autoimmunity, transplantation, and immunotherapy.

This Nobel Prize demonstrates how immunology is central to medicine and human health. The ability to harness, modulate, or restrain immune responses holds promise across a vast range of diseases — from autoimmune conditions to cancer, allergies, infectious disease, and beyond. The recognition of Dr. Sakaguchi and his co-laureates reaffirms that investments in basic immunology research yield profound dividends for patients worldwide.
