Both The Journal of Immunology and ImmunoHorizons have recently issued calls for Section Editors, with applications open though March 31. Peer-review is a crucial element of scientific publishing, and Section Editors play a vital role at both AAI journals. They oversee the review process within the areas of their expertise. Additionally, the role requires the ability to assess the quality of science quickly and the flexibility to meet short deadlines.
We asked Gail Bishop, Ph.D., DFAAI, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Immunology since 2024, and Bonnie Dittel. Ph.D., the new editor-in-chief of ImmunoHorizons, about this important role and what they are looking for in new Section Editors.
“Being a Section Editor requires time and thoughtful effort, but it can be very rewarding to work closely as a team with the Editor-In-Chief and the editorial staff to help authors improve their manuscripts, and to interpret reviewer comments.”
Gail Bishop, Ph.D., DFAAI, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Immunology
“To be a Section Editor for journal focused on the entire immune system requires a broad knowledge of the field of immunology. Since ImmunoHorizons has only five Section Editors, each one must be able to handle journal articles outside of their direct area of expertise. You need to be able to assess the quality of science quickly and be flexible enough to meet short deadlines.”
Bonnie Dittel. Ph.D., editor-in-chief of ImmunoHorizons
Both EICs agreed that Section Editors have the opportunity to make the editorial process better for everyone involved. “You can have a significant positive impact on the overall publishing experience for authors,” said Bishop. Dittel added that “being a Section Editor is an excellent way to keep abreast of new findings in immunology while ensuring scientific quality in published findings. Peer review is the backbone of science, and taking the time to find good reviewers is worth it.”
